Brandon Heath put on an impressive scoring display today. His first two baskets came off floaters in the lane, where he penetrated pass Trey Johnson and lofted the ball towards the basket before the help defense could arrive. The combo guard penetrated to the basket many times throughout the game, yielding a number of mid-range shots and lay-ups in traffic. Heath’s jump shot lacks NBA range at this point however, as he proved on both of his attempts today.

For a scoring guard, Heath also did a decent job distributing the ball, particularly in transition where he set up teammates on 4 fast breaks. Despite his good passing today, he lacks the vision and the mind-set of a point guard, and will likely spend the majority of his career playing off the ball. We probably won’t see Brandon Heath appear on a roster anytime soon, but he did have a very good game today.

Brandon Heath had a solid showing, doing a great job scoring the ball, but as evidenced by his statline, not much else. He spent the vast majority of his time off the ball, and he wasn’t forcing the issue with his shot, so it’s hard to take issue with his unbalanced statline, but he’s probably not explosive or dynamic enough to get by just by scoring at the next level. He got his scores in a variety of ways, hitting on pull-up and spot-up shots from long range both inside and outside the three-point arc, the nicest shot of which was a stepback jumper from just inside the three-point line. He made a few right-handed drives, one of which he finished after weaving through a few defenders, and another of which he missed off the glass off a nice up-and-under move. He got his other scores on lay-ups where he broke ahead in transition.

In terms of passing the ball, Heath made a few nice passes to cutters and open shooters, but didn’t notch any assists and wasn’t really looking to be a playmaker for his teammates, even for the five or so minutes he played the point for his team. Defensively, Heath played aggressively at times, but also bit on some fakes on one occasion against Ron Lewis, getting scored on after losing his position.

One of the favorites of lead trainer Dan Barto and company, we’ve been hearing an awful lot about the daily scoring clinics Brandon Heath has been putting on here. He did a lot of the same right in front of our eyes, showing phenomenal instincts for putting the ball in the basket in basically every way imaginable.

Showing beautiful shooting mechanics (35/47 or 74.4% from the NBA 3-point line w/feet set, 29/49 or 59% on the run), a great first step, and plenty of wiggle to create space for himself and keep his defender off balance with his terrific mid-range game or floater at the basket, Heath was responsible for some really impressive sequences. He also had a few inevitable bad ones due to his insistence of trying to be both flashy and productive at all times, but as he gets older, he should figure out how to iron out the wrinkles in his game and become more efficient.

Nothing we saw here really led us to believe that he has much point guard in him as far as true playmaking skills go, but with the direction the league is heading in these days, that might not be such a bad thing anymore. He can create his own shot with the best of them, and has great ability to get his man in the air and by him with a variety of shot-fakes, jukes, jab-steps and a super crossover. Tough shots are nothing for him regardless of the range, but he has a tendency to overdo it as we saw over the course of his career at San Diego State.

Heath has been invited to the Orlando pre-draft camp and will have a chance to impress if he continues to look the way he has at the Home Depot Center over the past few weeks. He doesn’t have to be Steve Nash there…Bobby Jackson or Eddie House will certainly do. Improving his shot-selection and defense and getting stronger finishing better around the basket will definitely help.

Another extremely talented combo draft prospect at San Diego State, Heath was recently named Mountain West conference player of the year for the way he led his team to the tournament thanks to his perimeter skills. Heath is an excellent perimeter shooter who has a tendency to abuse his stroke through the poor shot selection he often displays. He has solid athleticism but again forces the issue a bit here, showing a questionable basketball IQ and an even more questionable attitude freezing his teammates out at times. At 6-3 Heath will need to show point guard skills in order to not get discarded in the tweener basket by NBA scouts, but still looks pretty far from this from what we’ve seen this year. An unlikely upset over Indiana could surely help Heath’s stock, but showing legit passing skills would help him going into the 2006-2007 season even more. We’ve been told to expect Heath’s name on the early entry list come April, but fully expect to see him back at SDSU if he has any aspirations of playing in the NBA at some point in his career.
