Vegas Summer League: Day Four

Vegas Summer League: Day Four
Jul 10, 2007, 04:31 am
Game One: Boston Celtics 53, San Antonio Spurs 61

In the opening contest of today’s action, both teams really struggled getting into an offensive flow, so it wasn’t a very easy game to watch. No player was ever able to really get into a groove on the offensive end, though Jackie Butler came the closest to it in the second half.

Boston Celtics

Matt Williams

Rajon Rondo
10 Points, 5 Rebounds, 1 Assist, 7 Turnovers, 7 Fouls, 3-8 FG, 4-4 FT

-Rondo has been completely focused on deferring the ball to his teammates, and wasn’t aggressive with the ball.
-When he did have an easy opportunity, he got to the free throw long and finished around the rim well.
-He displayed good range on the one jump shot he hit, and proved his merit as an athlete by attacking the glass.

Allan Ray
7 Points, 1 Rebound, 4 Turnovers, 3 Fouls, 3-9 FG, 1-5 3FG

-Ray had a hard time getting going today, as his shot was not as consistent as it usually is.
-Without his outside shot, Ray had a hard time opening up the rest of his game, and didn’t leave his mark tonight

Leon Powe
7 Points, 5 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 3 Turnovers, 5 Fouls, 2-4 FG, 3-6 FT

-Powe had a hard time matching up with San Antonio’s huge bigmen, but still managed to get involved offensively tonight.
-It was hard for him to maintain post position and get offensive rebounds, sharply diminishing the number of touches he got in comparison to his last game.

Gerald Green
10 Points, 3 Rebounds, 1 Steal, 1 Block, 3 Turnovers, 6 Fouls, 3-10 FG, 4-5FT

-Today was not Green’s day offensively, but he still managed to make an impact by doing the little things.
-Green ran the floor unbelievably hard, making plays on both ends of the floor back-to-back on two occasions.
-He pursued shots in transition, using his awesome athleticism to challenge shots well above the rim.

Glen Davis
12 Points, 9 Rebounds, 1 Assist, 1 Steal, 1 Block, 5 Turnovers, 4 Fouls, 2-8 FG, 8-10 FT

-Davis played an inspired game tonight, running the floor much harder than usual.
-He used some effective spin moves around the rim, but didn’t create a lot of space for himself leading to numerous trips to the line.
-Davis rebounded out of his area, and showed some football-like explosiveness with a big block on one possession.

San Antonio Spurs

Joseph Treutlein

C.J. Watson
15 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals, 4 turnovers, 4-8 FG, 7-9 FT

-Watson had a solid overall game, showing the same package he exhibited at last year’s pre-draft camps, looking like very much the same player.
-Watson has great form on his jump shot, even though he wasn’t able to knock down many from deep today.
-Watson exhibits good court vision, and makes good passes when he has the opportunity, but he doesn’t have the first step to consistently create off the dribble.
-Defensively, Watson played solid man-to-man defense, while also showing good anticipation in the passing lanes, picking off four passes on the game.

Marcus Williams
3 points, 2 rebounds, 1-7 FG, 1-2 FT

-Marcus Williams really struggled here, constantly settling for contested, fadeaway shots that he wasn’t able to convert on.
-Williams’ one made shot of the game was on a lay-up cutting to the basket, which is something he should do more of, as opposed to settling for off-balanced perimeter shots.
-Williams’ defense was inconsistent, at times playing good defense on Gerald Green, but at others not looking so formidable.

James White
6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 turnovers, 1-7 FG, 0-3 3PT, 4-8 FT

-James White had a tough game, missing on most of his lay-up and outside shot attempts.
-White did manage to draw contact on drives and cuts to the basket, though, getting to the foul line, where he scored most of his points.
-White played pretty lazily on the defensive end, not fighting hard through screens and not always getting into defensive position and moving his feet laterally.

Jackie Butler
16 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 turnovers, 8-14 FG

-Jackie Butler appears to have added a mid-range shot to his game, looking very comfortable shooting from 10-15 feet, even though he hit on just one of his three attempts from that range in this game.
-Butler looked at his best in the post, exhibiting a soft touch on lay-ups near the basket, where he consistently got good position.
-Butler’s biggest problem at this stage is a lack of lift around the basket, something that may be attributed to him not being in the greatest shape.
-Butler showed very good court awareness in this game on the offensive end, always recognizing where he is in relation to the basket, and making a handful of nice passes out of the post, some of which were for assists.

Game Two: Detroit Pistons 80, Memphis Grizzlies 78

The second game of today was a lot more exciting than the first, which isn’t a surprise given that there were a lot more players likely to be playing large roles in the NBA soon. Detroit’s pair of first-round picks look like they’ll be in the regular rotation as soon as the season gets underway, and all of Memphis’ future core was here in action. The game went down to the wire, but Detroit pulled it out, behind Stuckey, Afflalo, and third-year player Jason Maxiell.

Detroit Pistons

Joseph Treutlein

Rodney Stuckey
27 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers, 9-16 FG, 0-1 3PT, 9-9 FT

-Stuckey may have had the most impressive performance of the day, hitting on various shots out to college three-point range, and consistently getting the first step on his man.
-Stuckey was at his best taking his man off the dribble, especially when he got a high screen at the top of the key.
-Stuckey used various spin and crossover moves to get past his man, showing the ability to pull up from mid-range or take it to the basket, where he can score with either hand or draw contact and get to the free-throw line.
-Stuckey exhibited pretty good court vision here, but is more of an opportunistic passer, and doesn’t really have a true point guard’s mentality.

Arron Afflalo
11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 turnovers, 4-13 FG, 1-3 3PT, 2-3 FT

-Afflalo didn’t shoot for a high percentage here, but took mostly good shot attempts, and looked made some very nice plays with the ball.
-Afflalo had some nice, crafty finishes around the hoop, showing good ability to adjust and good ability to draw contact near the rim.
-Afflalo exhibited nice court vision on a few occasions, dishing out a few good passes.
-Afflalo wasn’t hitting his long-range shots here, but that’s something that should come around with time.

Sammy Mejia
2 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers, 1-4 FG, 0-2 FT

-Mejia blended in with his team well, not doing anything outstanding but not making many mistakes.
-He made a few nice passes on drives and cuts to the basket, exhibited good court vision and decision-making abilities.
-Mejia looks a step slow against this higher level of competition, and his ceiling as a player will likely be limited due to his lack of speed with the ball in his hands.

Jason Maxiell
14 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers, 6-12 FG, 2-2 FT

-Maxiell started off the game slow, not looking very intense on the defensive end and struggling to contest shots against him by larger players.
-Maxiell got better as the game went on, dunking the ball when he had the opportunity near the basket and consistently hitting on jump shots from 10 feet out.

Cheikh Samb
12 points, 10 rebounds, 1 block, 2 turnovers, 6-9 FG, 0-1 FT

-Cheikh Samb has been a nice surprise here, showing good mobility and coordination that couples well with his excellent size and length.
-Samb has nice hands and has a hook shot that is extremely hard to block, though he doesn’t frequently go to it and doesn’t look comfortable with it outside of five feet.
-Samb also made a handful of nice passes on the day, showing pretty good court awareness.
-Defensively, plays pretty good weakside defense, not always being in exactly the right place, but having the length to make up for it in this setting.

Memphis Grizzlies

Matt Williams

Mike Conley
8 Points, 1 Rebound, 3 Assists, 2 Turnovers, 4 Fouls, 2-7 FG, 4-4 FT

-Conley was decent today, but didn’t play as well as he did in the first game.
-His floater wasn’t falling, making it difficult for him to score around the rim. However, he was hitting from the foul-line, which alleviated some of those struggles.
-He hit one jumper from about 20 feet out, and utilized his crossover to effectively create space.

Alexander Johnson
9 Points, 1 Rebound, 1 Assist, 2 Fouls, 3-5 FG, 3-3 FT

-Johnson was very aggressive when he got the ball today, dunking everything around the rim and attacking the defense at all costs.
-Johnson didn’t attack the glass extremely hard, but his teammates picked up the slack for him.
-Johnson looked much better shooting free throws today, and converted on all of his attempts.

Kyle Lowry
23 Points, 1 Rebound, 1 Assist, 1 Steal, 3 Turnovers, 4 Fouls, 5-10 FG, 12-13 FT

-Lowry played a brutally efficient game today by getting to the line frequently and converting on most of his free throws.
-Lowry displayed solid range on his jump shot, but didn’t venture toofar outside of the NCAA three-point line.
-Lowry made solid decisions with the ball, and used his quick hands to his advantage on both sides of the floor.

Rudy Gay
11 Points, 11 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 1 Steal, 5 Turnovers, 2 Fouls, 3-16 FG, 5-9 FT

-Gay had a hard time getting his jumper going, but he was persistent in sending up attempts from all over the court.
-At some point, Gay decided to focus on other aspects of the game, and came up big for his team.
-Gay rebounded extremely well on both ends, and made a spectacular block on a transition play.

Terrance Kinsey
4 Points, 1 Rebound, 1 Steal, 2 Fouls, 1-5 FG, 3-3 FT

-Kinsey didn’t really seize many opportunities tonight, and played more of a complementary role offensively.
-His shot wasn’t falling, but he may no real effort to force himself into a rhythm.
-Kinsey did throw down one nice dunk, but had trouble creating space to get the rest of his game going.

Rod Benson
10 Points, 6 Rebounds, 1 Steal, 1 Block, 2 Turnovers, 2 Blocks, 3-6 FG, 4-6 FT

-Benson looked good today off the bench, providing his team with a solid shot of energy.
-Benson converted a couple of dunks, and worked off the ball to get open for easy opportunities.
-Benson made an effort on the glass, and came up with a few nice boards.

Game Three: Golden State Warriors 94, Philadelphia 76ers 87

The Sixers and Warriors played a competitive game where Marco Belinelli came out of the gates scoring the same way he did in the previous game. He cooled off as the game went on, but Pierre Pierce picked up the slack, as Golden State won a hard-fought game with Philadelphia, who were led with strong performances by Rodney Carney and Louis Williams.

Golden State Warriors

Joseph Treutlein

Marco Belinelli
23 points, 2 assists, 2 steals, 9-23 FG, 5-8 3PT

-Belinelli’s game revolves around his outside shot, which has good form and a very quick release, while Belinelli has absolutely no conscience about shooting every chance he gets.
-Belinelli was lights out when spotting up from deep yet again today, but he struggled when he tried to go off the dribble inside the arc, not hitting with the same consistency on pull-up and fade-away shots with a hand in his face.
-Belinelli made some nice drives to the rim, but he doesn’t draw much contact and he usually opts to put up fancy, soft shots that are prone to being blocked, even if he does show good creativity getting them off.
-Belinelli exhibited some decent ball-handling an occasion or two, not turning the ball over when he put the ball on the floor, but he doesn’t look like he can consistently create that way yet.
-Belinelli played solid defense when in man-to-man situations, moving his feet and showing solid fundamentals.

Pierre Pierce
22 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 4 turnovers, 8-13 FG, 1-2 3PT, 5-6 FT

-Pierre Pierce had another strong showing, scoring in a variety of ways while also making a few nice assists.
-Pierce is clearly more scoring guard than passing guard, and he’s really showed that off here, scoring on outside shots, floaters, lay-ups, and by getting to the rim.
-Pierce also made some nice passes, though, including transition assists and passes off of pick-and-rolls.

Kelenna Azubuike
13 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 4-10 FG, 2-3 3PT, 3-8 FT

-Kelenna Azubuike had another solid game, hitting on some spot-up shots from outside and scoring around the basket on cuts and in transition.

Patrick O’Bryant
4 points, 3 rebounds, 2-6 FG

-Patrick O’Bryant had a very tough game, missing on some shots from outside, as he settled for a few from 18-20 feet out, something he isn’t usually known for.
-O’Bryant got his two scores on impressive dunks, where he showed off his great length, taking off from well away from the basket.
-O’Bryant didn’t really assert himself on the glass, not making the impact a player of his size should.

Philadelphia 76ers

Joseph Treutlein

Louis Williams
23 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 turnovers, 8-16 FG, 1-2 3PT, 6-11 FT

-Louis Williams posted a near triple-double, putting up another very strong summer league performance here.
-Williams hit on pull-up shots from deep and also did a good job getting to the line when attacking the rim.
-Williams made a few nice assists on drive-and-dishes, but also made some bad decisions with the ball when driving in the lane, leading to unnecessary turnovers and bad shot attempts.

Thaddeus Young
15 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 turnovers, 7-20 FG, 1-1 FT

-Thaddeus Young had a pretty tough game, scoring 15 points, but on 20 shot attempts, a very inefficient showing.
-Young missed on outside shots and fancy drives to the rim, getting most of his scores on putbacks when he really pursued the boards, something he can really excel at with his size and strength from the wing position.
-Young did have a few nice scoring plays, though, including a spot-up shot from 18 feet and a left-handed floater that he was also fouled on.

Rodney Carney
19 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, 8-16 FG, 1-3 3PT, 2-6 FT

-Rodney Carney had a strong game, hitting from outside and finishing strong at the hoop, though not showing much of a mid-range game, as has been his mantra for awhile.
-Carney finished on some explosive, athletic dunks at the rim, but also mixed in some finesse, including one very impressive spinning floater off the glass.
-Carney ran the floor well and finished in transition, while also hitting on some spot-up shots from outside in the halfcourt.
-Carney didn’t show much in terms of ball-handling, especially with his left hand, which is still very underdeveloped.

Jason Smith
12 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks, 4 turnovers, 5-10 FG, 2-2 FT

-Jason Smith started off the game roughly, missing on a few mid-range shots, but his touch came around as the game went on, as he hit on a few from 10-18 feet out, including a spinning fadeaway from 15.
-Smith didn’t fare too well when he tried to take his man to the rim, missing badly on a couple of occasions, not having the strength to force his way to the rim yet.

Game Five: Minnesota Timberwolves 85, New Orleans Hornets 83 (OT)

Note: Box Score was not available for this game.

In the Summer League’s first game in the Thomas and Mack Center, the Minnesota Timberwolves edged the New Orleans Hornets in overtime due largely to the play of Craig Smith.

Minnesota Timberwolves

Rashad McCants

-McCants had a decent game today, but didn’t do too much to differentiate himself from the pack.
-McCants was having a hard time finding his range, but managed to contribute by kicking the ball out to his teammates and getting out in transition.
-He also took care of business late in the game by taking a key charge.

Corey Brewer

-Brewer played relatively well in his debut, and some of his mistakes can probably be attributed to anxiousness.
-Brewer didn’t shoot the ball extremely well, but he made a few jumpshots and sprinkled in a few nifty finishes for good measure.
-Brewer played solid defense, and pursued rebounds on both end when he
saw opportunities.

Randy Foye

-Tonight was just not Foye’s night. It really didn’t seem like he was trying to play his game
-Foye deferred to his teammates, and really tried to run the point like a true distributor.
-He made a handful of good plays on the offensive end, but also struggled to get his shot off at times.

Craig Smith

-Smith came up big today, using his strength and touch to get whatever he wanted around the rim.
-He used his timing and strength to gather numerous rebounds, and made and effort to get to the line as often as he could.
-Smith worked for everything down low, and it paid off all game long.

Chris Richard

-Richard looked good in somewhat limited time.
-Richard is very similar to Craig Smith in that he gets his by working hard in the paint.
-Richard converted on a dunk and a tip in, but came up short on his only back to the basket opportunity.

New Orleans Hornets

Marcus Vinicius

-Vinicius came out firing, and make his first two shots before disappearing to an extent.
-Vinicius seems content to let his teammates create for themselves, and doesn’t really do a whole lot on the offensive end.
-When Vinicius did decide to assert himself, he came up with a handful of good drives that sent him to the line.

Yemi Nicholson

-Nicholson had a tough go of things tonight, missing an easy dunk, and having a tough time pulling the ball in.
-Nicholson had one nice finish in traffic, but really hasn’t used his bulk to his advantage.
-Nicholson had a hard time containing Craig Smith, due to his lack of foot speed and timing.

Julian Wright

-Wright played a very good game today, moving the ball and setting up his teammates as well as anyone could have expected him to.
-Wright utilized his length to get into the paint, before dishing the ball to teammates for an easy basket or scoring himself using his jumper.
-Wright showed the same range he did yesterday, hitting a three to send this game into overtime.

Jackson Vroman

-Vroman looked good today once again, but didn’t put up as solid numbers as he did last game.
-Vroman was solid once again with the ball in his hands, and is clearly more comfortable when putting the ball on the floor.

Adam Haluska

-Haluska made a number of outside shots today, but also contributed with some nice drives and smart passes.
-Haluska showed a nice reverse layup off a crossover that really hasn’t been part of his game in the past.
-Haluska even blocked a shot on defense leading to an easy basket on the other side of the floor.

Game Five: New York Knick 87, Seattle Supersonics 74

Kevin Durant struggled once again here in his second game of summer league, having a lot of trouble getting off high-percentage shot attempts, and struggling converting on shots in general. Jeff Green picked up the slack for the Sonics, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the performances by the Knicks’ assortment of youth.

New York Knicks

Joseph Treutlein

Wilson Chandler
12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers, 5-10 FG, 0-2 3PT, 2-2 FT

-Wilson Chandler had a strong debut for the Knicks, showing confidence and solid form on his outside shot out to NBA three-point range, converting on two shots from around 18 feet in the game.
-Chandler finished well in transition, getting out on a few occasions, and starting a few breaks himself with weakside steals.
-Chandler played good, tough defense in general, making a few deflections leading to turnovers in addition to his picks.

Demetris Nichols
13 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, 1 turnover, 6-12 FG, 1-5 3PT, 0-1 FT

-Demetris Nichols hit a bunch of shots early, then cooled off as the game went on, showing how dangerous he can be from outside when he gets hot.
-Nichols looks more comfortable with his handle, scoring with his left hand on a left-handed drive on one occasion, and putting the ball on the floor on a few others as well.
-Nichols ran the floor very well, getting ahead of the pack in transition every chance he got, and finishing well at the rim when he got the ball.

Renaldo Balkman
10 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 steal, 4 turnovers, 5-10 FG

-Renaldo Balkman played a typical hustle game, chasing down loose rebounds and making deflections, while finishing at the rim when he got the opportunity.
-Balkman missed on his sole outside shot attempt of the game, and got all of his points right near the basket, on cuts or putbacks.

Randolph Morris
10 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals, 4 turnovers, 5-7 FG, 0-3 FT

-Randolph Morris showed a nice assortment of moves in the post, including a hook shot, turnaround jumper, and pull-up jumper, all with range out to around eight feet.
-Morris also did a good job on the boards, using his size and boxing out his man well.
-Morris struggled from the free-throw line, missing on all three of his attempts, something he should definitely be working on as a post-oriented big.

Nate Robinson
19 points, 7 assists, 3 rebounds, 7 turnovers, 6-11 FG, 2-4 3PT, 5-5 FT

-Nate Robinson looked spectacular at times and pretty bad at others, showing both sides of his dynamic game.
-Robinson hit on some tough outside shots and made some very impressive drives to the hoop, finishing on floaters, scoop shots, and one very impressive full 360 degrees spin lay-up in transition on one occasion.
-Robinson did a good job on the drive-and-dish in the halfcourt and pushing the ball in transition, but was also very turnover-prone, something that has been a problem for him in the past.

Seattle Supersonics

Joseph Treutlein

Kevin Durant
18 points, 1 rebound, 2 turnovers, 4-19 FG, 2-6 3PT, 8-8 FT

-Kevin Durant had a very tough game here, getting blocked on drives to the rim and struggling to convert on his outside shots, as he clearly hasn’t adjusted to the higher level of play here.
-Durant also has been missing on fairly open shots as well, so that part of his game will come around with time, as he gets past this stage of nervousness.
-Durant’s just one rebound on the game is cause for concern, though, as he should be pulling in a lot more, even if he does need to get stronger to reach his full potential.
-Durant looked lazy on the defensive end at times, not really moving his feet to stay in front of his man, not putting in much effort.

Jeff Green
17 points, 3 rebounds, 4 turnovers, 5-12 FG, 1-4 3PT, 6-7 FT

-Jeff Green played a pretty nice game, hitting from long range on multiple occasions, including one NBA three-pointer.
-Green also attacked the rim in transition, making one extremely nice dunk where he took off from about 10 feet out, and went through two defenders without even being phased, drawing the and-1 opportunity.
-Green didn’t get to show off much of his passing game here, though he spent most of his time on the wing, not in the high or low post.

Saer Sene
6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 turnovers, 3-4 FG

-Saer Sene didn’t play much, but looked good with his hook shot when he got the chance, converting on two of three tries from about five feet out.
-Sene also scored on a putback lay-up, showing nice touch off the glass.

Johan Petro
5 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers, 2-5 FG, 1-2 FT

-Petro exhibited a nice spinning hook shot early in the game, where he backed down his man before putting up the shot.
-Petro also hit on a shot from 15 feet out, though he missed on another from 10.
-Petro made a nice block in the post in a man-to-man situation, and did a pretty good job on the boards, using his size and boxing out his man.

Game Six: Cleveland Cavaliers 93, Phoenix Suns 89

Note: Box Score was not available for this game

Cleveland Cavaliers

Matt Williams

Shannon Brown

-Brown did a good job getting to the rim today, and he avoided shooting jump shots as the game went on.
-He turned the corner on a couple of drives and finished with explosive dunks.
-Brown did hit a couple of jump shots, including a nice fadeaway.
-Brown put in work on the defensive end, drawing a charge, and stripping his man clean on one occasion.

Dijon Thompson

-Thompson had a hard time getting his jump shot to fall, but managed to get to the rim often enough to compensate for his shortcomings.
-He was consistent from the line, and was active on defense.
-Thompson is capable of bring the ball up the floor on occasion, but really isn’t a good enough ball handler to be considered a point forward.

Dwayne Jones

-Jones came up big today, dunking everything in sight and going after every rebound.
-Since Jones isn’t going to work anyone over in the post, he works extremely hard on the glass.
-Jones is active enough to make an impact, and got to the efficiently tonight.

Darius Rice

-Rice missed his first few shots, but turned things around as the game went on.
-When Rice began hitting from the perimeter, he gained the confidence to step inside and grab a few rebounds.
-He showed a nice fallaway jumper that he shoots with phenomenal touch.

PJ Tucker

-Tucker played well today and came up with a handful of nice plays.
-Tucker used the rim as a shield as often as he could, converting on a handful of reverse layups.
-Tucker even moved the ball well, setting up his teammates for easy looks.

Phoenix Suns

Matt Williams

Alando Tucker

-Tucker didn’t look great today, but managed to get to the line often enough to still be effective.
-Tucker’s jump shot doesn’t appear to have improved much, as he made an NCAA three-pointer, but missed a few shots from around the range.
-Tucker still isn’t a pure enough perimeter player to fit perfectly into the Suns’ system.

Marcus Banks

-Banks played a fantastic game, looking unstoppable shooting from the perimeter and driving to the basket.
-Banks was hitting on all cylinders, drilling threes and using his insane quickness to attack the basket.
-He used his body extremely well on both offense and defense, proving to be productive on almost every possession.
-Banks was almost impossible to stay in front of, and he really had the ball on a string.

Pape Sow

-Sow played a decent game today, but really struggled to get going from down low.
-His jump shot isn’t pretty, but it is effective.
-Sow had his shot blocked a few times, but didn’t stop trying to get after his man down low.
