NEWS AND NOTES
-The new bracket projections were posted yesterday. Be sure and check them out if you haven't already. The bracket and article are located in the post below this one.
-NORTH CAROLINA STATE AT GEORGIA TECH (ACC). NC State is coming off a huge upset win over North Carolina, but is still way outside of being considered for a spot in the bracket. Georgia Tech ended a four game losing streak with a big win over Clemson this past weekend, but still needs to build on that in order to feel safe. They need to take care of business at home against an NC State team who isnt anywhere close to the bubble.
-VIRGINIA AT MARYLAND (ACC). This is a fairly big rivalry in the ACC. Virginia has won six games in a row and gotten two really big wins against Duke and Clemson in that stretch. Theyre also in a three way tie for first place, so a win on the road in this game would really be big for them. Maryland is just 3-5 in conference play and although they have a few good wins, they arent entirely safe and cant afford a major collapse. They really need to win this game at home and avoid falling to 3-6 in conference play.
-ILLINOIS STATE AT MISSOURI STATE (Missouri Valley). Missouri State has won three conference games in a row, and needs to keep it up today. This is a game they should win. Theyre playing an inferior team at home. Theyre in a tie for third place in the league, and although theyre in the bracket, they cant really afford a major slump, so they need to take care of business in games like this.
-MICHIGAN AT OHIO STATE (Big Ten). This is a big rivalry, but Ohio State clearly looks like the better team, and considering the fact that theyre at home it could be a long night for Michigan. Ohio State is still in contention to end up as a #1 seed, but they are a solid #2 right now and shouldnt really drop from that so long as they dont collapse between now and the end. Michigan is on the bubble, and is just outside of my bracket. A win here would obviously be a major statement win, and really boost their resume from being on the bubble to being solidly in.
-CINCINNATI AT PROVIDENCE (Big East). Providence is just outside the bubble, and needs to string together some wins in order to get themselves into the mix. They really dont want to lose to a poor Cincinnati team at home.
-AIR FORCE AT SAN DIEGO STATE (Mountain West). Air Force is deadlocked with BYU for the conference lead. They have a potentially tough test against a very talented, but yet inconsistent San Diego State team tonight. SDSU has won four of their last six with their only two losses being on the road against UNLV and Air Force, both of which were close games, so they are playing better. Air Force needs to be on upset alert against a team thats looking to make some noise down the stretch.
-LSU AT TENNESSEE (SEC). LSU began the season ranked in the top ten, but have lost five in a row and are now on the outside looking in, and need to win some big games to get back into the mix. Tennessee has hit the skids lately, and were blown out by Florida in their last game, so they need some wins themselves in order to avoid sliding any further down the totem poll. This is a game between two teams who are looking to pull themselves out of a slump.
-NEBRASKA AT TEXAS TECH (Big Twelve). After winning back to back games against top ten teams, Texas Tech has lost three in a row, and really didnt play all that well in any of those losses. Theyre better at home than they are on the road, and theyre facing a Nebraska team that has struggled since beginning conference play. They need to win and end their losing streak.
-SAINT JOSEPHS AT VILLANOVA. This is one of the most intense rivalries in the country. This year, its somewhat of a mismatch. Villanova is a solid NCAA Tournament team and Saint Josephs is pretty much playing for the NIT right now. Saint Joes is very young and although theyre inconsistent, they are also capable of playing really well. Nova needs to take care of business so they can maintain bragging rights and pick up another win to sustain their resume.
